The answer matters. You are trusting someone with your child’s future—a child you’ve invested in emotionally, financially, and academically for years. A great counselor brings clarity, structure, and confidence. The wrong one can create confusion, stress, or missed opportunities.

Here’s what truly distinguishes the best college counselors.

1. Great Counselors Prioritize Ethics and Boundaries

A qualified counselor:

  • Does not write essays for students

  • Does not promise admissions outcomes

  • Supports the student’s authentic voice

  • Helps teens make informed and confident choices

2. Great Counselors Use Systems That Support Accountability and Progress

College admissions is timeline-driven and detail-heavy. It requires:

  • Task tracking (we have assignments in our CounselMore program that explain things and are timely)

  • Shared communication tools (we send texts and emails to remind students of to-dos)

  • Real-time data (wonder if you can get in? Our college data is the best and most current)

If a counselor says:

  • “I can get your student into ___,”

  • “We guarantee acceptance,” or

  • “We have a special relationship with Admissions”…

Run.
No one, not counselors, not teachers, not alumni, can guarantee admission to any college. Ethical counselors guide, support, and strengthen your student’s application, but they never make promises they can’t control. A counselor who manages the entire process through scattered texts, untracked emails, or a “call me when you need something” approach is not using a system—they’re improvising. College admissions requires:
